photo of Renate in garden My fascination with psychology has been life-long, from the moment, at age twelve, that I began writing diaries to "find myself". I know from my own experience what a long and hard road it can be for women in our culture to find our voices. My engagement in the second wave women's movement and my deep attunement with the renaissance of women's spirituality propelled me early on toward working with women, leading awareness groups, and creating rituals.

When I relocated to California in the mid-eighties, I entered a culture where healing and humane notions of getting help for any kind of problem seemed to be the very air that people breathed. Therapy did not have the dusty, patriarchal outlook it had in Europe. I began talking with a woman therapist to help me with my transition to a new culture and a new, challenging relationship. Therapy, the particular work of soul-searching in a place of support and sacred privacy, became one of the most exciting emotional and intellectual adventures of my life. I was not only curious to discover my unconscious patterns and uncover my own secrets; I was endlessly intrigued by how the process worked, and by what was and was not possible in this strange, compelling relationship between therapist and client.

To explore the possibility of working together, you are welcome to contact me.

The healing and satisfaction I found through therapy became an incentive to enter the field myself. In the late eighties, I earned an M.A. in clinical psychology and completed MFCC training. For several years, I consulted with two old masters in the field of psychiatry, Beulah Parker and Otto Will. Looking for a more distinctly spiritual path in counseling, I became ordained as a minister of the Association for the Integration of the Whole Person (AIWP). More recently, I went into additional training as a co-active coach with The Coaches Training Institute (CTI), and obtained my Ph.D. in psychology at UIL (University of Intergrative Learning).

At present, I am a provost at UIL ( University of Integrative Learning), guiding students through MA and Ph.D. programs that reward students for their life-long learning. Read about my own experience as a learner and now provost of UIL: "Harvesting Life" (www.renatestendhal.com/essays/essay_harvestinglife.htm) ( www.aiwp.org/university.asp)

How to proceed

We will talk by e-mail and phone about the issues you want to explore, the questions you may have, and what you hope to gain through counseling. I will tell you if I am experienced and comfortable with these issues. We will discuss my fee (sliding scale available) and talk about scheduling an initial appointment. Our work may be carried out at either of my offices, and/or by phone or e-mail.

After fifteen years of practice, I am still deeply moved by the continuous mutual learning and growth to be found in the process of listening, questioning, and honest searching. When I look back at my own experience in therapy, I am convinced that the way we relate to our counselor is an interesting reflection of how we relate in general. I am reminded of the moment in the movie Kissing Jessica Stein when Helen wants to know if her new lover Jessica has come out to her therapist.

Helen: What does your therapist think?
Jessica: Oh, I didn't tell my therapist.
Helen: Why not?
Jessica: It's personal. What I like about being a counselor and coach is precisely this potential for a safe, caring, personal connection. I cherish dream work and the subtle ways we translate feelings into words, find and refine our personal goals and truths. Coaching takes place mainly on the phone, but in my office, I offer you the use of a sand tray--a playful tool that allows the unconscious to surface.

I see myself as a guide, a "way companion," and mentor, especially for women. I know from my own experience that in the presence of an attuned listener a great deal becomes possible: healing, growth, the unfolding of wings. I work with individuals and couples on a sliding fee scale. I also facilitate groups, lead workshops, and lecture.
